Earlier this year, I revised this site with a new tagline: “Capturing The Light”. For me, as a photographer, it’s a lot more than that, however. Light is the tool or the canvas I work with, but the real core is beauty. Creating beauty is it’s own reward. I do it instinctively and I would do it without pay. Because for me, it grabs who I really am and gives me deep joy.
Photography matters. It matters because, video notwithstanding, it is still one of the most powerful resources for communication. Think of the images that linger in your mind. Are they like an internal video sequence, or is there that one or two visuals that freeze the experience of that day, that moment, that time in your life. Apart from a love for painting I was hooked the first time I used my instamatic and got the film back. A way of looking, a way of feeling and experiencing was thrown open –– never to close. At the same time over my twenty plus years as a professional photographer, I’ve seen the arresting power of my photos as a communication tool. Now more than ever this tool needs to communicate for good, for people, for the planet.
