Working For A Living

Down In The Mines

Not long ago I went on assignment to Appalachia, more specifically we drove through the town of Appalachia on our way to the mine. People ask me what it was like being down 2000 ft inside a coal mine. It was not that frightening, especially because the mine owners place safety first. It turns out that making safety first actually results in higher profits because an accident really ruins the production schedule and usually means that part of the mine gets shut down. The shoot was exciting for me,  but I think one of the best parts was watching the miners come out when the shift ended. I expected a lot of sad faces or at least a rush to get away, but I didn’t see that. And when I was down in the mine everybody seemed pretty content to be there. Traveling on assignment always brings surprises and usually good ones.
